  • Celebrating Día de los Muertos with East High School: Uplifting Latino Youth

Hello, Midwest Mujeres! In the spirit of Día de los Muertos, we’re excited to highlight an inspiring youth-led event organized by one of our very own, Silvia Gomez, a dedicated Midwest Mujeres member and passionate advocate for young Latinos. Silvia serves as an advisor for East High School’s La Raza United , a student-driven program that celebrates Latino culture, unity, and empowerment. On November 2, 2024, La Raza United  will host its annual Día de los Muertos Performance & Fundraiser at East High School, with two showtimes—1 PM and 5 PM. Sign up link! Celebrating Día de los Muertos with East High School: Uplifting Latino Youth This year, we will honor loved ones who have passed by displaying their photos in a special video montage, which will play over the stage during the performance. The celebration includes food and crafts prepared by East High School parents, face painting, a lively game of Lotería, and more! Attendees dressed as a Catrín or Catrina will receive extra food tickets.  Tickets are available for $10 for adults, $7 for K-12 students, and free for children under 5. Scan the QR code in the flyer or pay cash at the door to participate in this cultural celebration. La Raza United: A Student-Led Movement La Raza United  was founded in 2015 by five visionary students looking for a space to connect and celebrate their heritage. Under Silvia’s mentorship, this program fosters a sense of belonging and cultural pride. The name “Raza” signifies “the people,” representing everyone in the Latino community and beyond. The group is open to all students, providing a space where they can feel confident in their identity and accepted for who they are. Students from grades 9 through 12 meet weekly to support each other, develop leadership skills, and build lasting friendships. Silvia shares that students often remark they would not have connected with each other without La Raza United . The Power of Mentorship and Mental Health Support Silvia’s journey with La Raza United  reflects her commitment to mentorship and youth mental health. Silvia Gomez recalls, “Growing up, we didn’t have mentors like this.” Mentorship is essential for young people, helping them build confidence, develop a positive self-identity, and navigate the challenges of balancing their cultural heritage with societal expectations. Latino youth often experience distinct challenges, from adapting to U.S. culture and balancing dual cultural identities to managing differences in language and values between generations. Additionally, factors like discrimination, bullying, financial hardship, and exposure to violence can contribute to mental health struggles, including symptoms of depression and anxiety (American Psychiatric Organization, 2019) . Programs like La Raza United  address these issues by providing safe spaces for expression, connection, and cultural pride. In Collaboration with the Xicano Institute for Education -- for which Silvia is a council member, la Raza United is provided with year-round workshops and resources that promote self-empowerment and cultural awareness. With the support of partners like  Leslie Peterson and UW Health,  La Raza United  connects students with Latino professionals and career development opportunities, inspiring them to set big goals and build practical life skills. Supporting La Raza United   Join East High School this November 2nd, Day of the Dead. Enjoy the show, food, games, and much more. It is an afternoon for the whole family. Donations are greatly appreciated! Proceeds from this event will go toward new regalia, field trips, and leadership development for La Raza United , with funds shared with Ballet Folklórico de María Díaz . Scholarships and volunteer opportunities are essential for sustaining and growing this work. Scholarships enable students to access educational resources and opportunities that shape their futures, while volunteer involvement provides valuable community connections and hands-on experiences, helping these young leaders develop skills and confidence. Those interested in sponsoring, providing scholarships, or volunteering should contact Silvia Gomez. • Celebrating Día de los Muertos with Midwest Mujeres: Building Community and Bridging Cultures

Midwest Mujeres, in partnership with the Fitchburg and Waunakee public libraries, is thrilled to present two upcoming Día de los Muertos events that celebrate culture, community, and tradition. These gatherings are part of a broader initiative to connect the Latino community with local libraries—spaces that have historically been underutilized by immigrant Latinos. Funded by the Beyond the Page program and inspired by the Ripple Project, these events aim to foster inclusion and create welcoming public spaces for all. Día de los Muertos with Midwest Mujeres Events! Fitchburg Library's Día de los Muertos Location: 5530 Lacy Road, Fitchburg, WI 53711 Date: Saturday, Oct 19th | 11 AM - 1 PM Activities: Play the Loteria game! Drink Champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate) Eat Pan de Muerto (Special Day of the Dead bread). Make crafts for children Learn about the ofrenda and the meaning of this celebration. Waunakee Library LINK Location: 201 N Madison Street, Waunakee, WI Date: Saturday, Oct 26th from 10 AM -1 PM Activities: Showing of Disney’s movie Coco for toda la familia! Serving Mexican hot chocolate (Champurrado) and Mexican sweet bread. Day of the Dead crafts for the children The Latina Waunakee Public Library Ambassadors project will present the meaning of this celebration. Research shows that immigrant Latinos are less likely to use public libraries than other groups, including U.S.-born Latinos. However, those who do use libraries tend to place high value on these resources. In Dane County, Latinos make up 6.9% of the population , the largest ethnic minority group in the area. For organizations like Midwest Mujeres, connecting these families with public resources is vital to building a more equitable community. Bridging Tradition and Community Araceli Esparza, a first-generation Latina speaker, consultant, and director of Midwest Mujeres, recognizes the significance of building bridges between Latino communities and public institutions. “This work is important to build initial relationships with public spaces and Latinas, to ensure they are welcomed,” says Esparza. The Midwest Mujeres Ambassadors are the Latina mujeres organizing these events and hired as community ambassadors to strengthen those connections. Esparza emphasized how these events are celebrations of a rich cultural tradition and opportunities to introduce Latina women to public spaces and resources in Dane County. "We were able to bring Latina women together to bridge this important cultural event to a larger rural Dane County community," she noted. Día de los Muertos at Fitchburg and Waunakee Libraries The first of these celebrations will take place at the **Fitchburg Public Library on Saturday, October 19th, from 10 AM to 1 PM**, and is free and open to the public. Attendees can expect a vibrant and educational experience that honors the traditions of Día de los Muertos, with altars, colorful decorations, and the chance to learn more about this special celebration of life and remembrance. The second event will be held at the **Waunakee Public Library**, expanding the reach of this cultural celebration to even more communities across rural Dane County. These Día de los Muertos events are part of the Ripple Project, a year-long series of free humanities programs focused on equity in Dane County public libraries. The Ripple Project, an initiative of Beyond the Page, aims to ensure public libraries are inclusive spaces where all community members feel welcome and represented. Join the Celebration As the Latino population continues to grow in Dane County, initiatives like these help create lasting connections between libraries and immigrant communities. Through these Día de los Muertos events, Midwest Mujeres and their partners are creating spaces where all can come together to celebrate heritage, learn from one another, and strengthen community bonds. Mark your calendars and join us in celebrating Día de los Muertos at the Fitchburg and Waunakee libraries! For more information on the Ripple Project and upcoming events, visit www.beyondthepage.info/ripple-project . Together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive community—one celebration at a time.

  • A Call for Solidarity: Venezuelan Voices and the Fight for Democracy

Hello Midwest Mujeres! As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month , we are thrilled to share exciting updates about our Be Bold Ambassador Program, which is in partnership with the Waunakee and Fitchburg libraries. We are now forming our ideas into events, and the women are meeting and creating new circles of support. The library and public spaces are important and underutilized resources for Latinas. As a reader and fan of pivotal stories, I'm so proud of this blog; Fernanda Alayo has truly stepped into the complexities of how politics, women's health, and democracy are lived. I am happy for Anabel's trust in Midwest Mujeres and her sharing her story. It's bold, and that is what we are known for. Bold Stories. Bold Mujeres. This week, we’re honored to feature a powerful letter, A Call for Solidarity: Venezuelan Voices and the Fight for Democracy , from one of our members, Anabel Carruyo. I am thrilled to be here today as a member of Midwest Mujeres and to have the opportunity to share something very close to my heart. I want to bring attention to a matter of great importance: Venezuela. Let’s talk about it. My name is Anabel Carruyo, and I am a mother with a deep love for Venezuela, the country I was forced to leave behind. Despite the hardships, I’ve fought with passion and determination to create a better life for myself and my daughter while also helping others through my work in real estate here in Madison. With a background in banking, where I managed mortgages, my transition into real estate felt natural. This work has allowed me to connect with fellow Latinos and immigrant families, supporting them in their journey to achieve the dream of homeownership—a goal that has become increasingly difficult due to economic instability. I understand the fear of financial insecurity firsthand, having lived through it in Venezuela. In 1998, I began to witness the collapse of the economy, with inflation soaring into the thousands—a situation almost unimaginable, even in war-torn nations. Sanctions crippled Venezuela’s ability to import goods, and many pharmaceutical companies and factories shut down or left the country. I endured this harsh reality for over a decade. In 2017, I faced the heartbreaking decision to leave my family and friends behind. I was pregnant with my first daughter, full of hope and dreams for her future when I learned I had a high-risk pregnancy. The lack of proper medical care in Venezuela made it impossible for me to stay. That was my turning point, and I arrived in the U.S. that same year. My heart goes out to the families who don’t have the opportunity to leave. The process of escaping and seeking asylum has become far more difficult, and many Venezuelan families are trapped with no viable paths to safety.  It has been 25 years since Chávez became president of Venezuela through democratic elections, taking advantage of widespread discontent by promising a fairer society. A military man resentful of the elites, Chávez seized absolute control of the institutions that generated wealth, changed the constitution to perpetuate his power, expropriated properties to reward his followers, expelled residents, imprisoned opponents, and murdered or tortured protesters. He leveraged the oil boom to buy allies worldwide, fund internal corruption, and undermine legal security, plunging the country into an economic crisis unprecedented in Latin America.  Before he died in 2013, Chávez transferred power to Nicolás Maduro through means that bypassed the democratic electoral process. By then, the electoral system was already subordinated to the dictatorship, and the will of the people no longer mattered. On July 28th, 2024, presidential elections were held under the dictatorship's complete control. The process was marked by the absence of international observers, the presence of disqualified candidates, a lack of checks and balances, and widespread threats and bribery. Maduro was once again proclaimed the winner by the CNE in another act of electoral fraud. Democracy is hard-fought. Recently, we saw this through Edmundo Gonzalez’s representation of the opposition party. However, the dictatorship has been violently attacking the opposition and its leaders, who continue to fight for their voices to be heard. The international community has issued statements and calls for transparency, but meaningful action has yet to follow. Meanwhile, Venezuelans continue to suffer and die under the dictatorship, while the military clings to power to avoid facing justice for their crimes. The courage and determination of our people are no longer enough on their own—we need more. Venezuela is facing a humanitarian crisis that borders on genocide, yet Venezuelans are not asking for pity—we are asking for support at this critical moment. It is vital that we hold our global leaders accountable, urging them to consider not just what is convenient, but what is right. While it may be convenient for some, like the U.S., to overlook the crisis due to interests such as oil, we must demand that they stand with Venezuela in its fight for democracy, justice, and freedom. Together, we can foster a path toward peace and reconciliation. After all, we are all citizens of the world! As a call to action, I urge you to: Stay Informed: Read up on Venezuela's situation from reputable sources such as: Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro Relies on Army, Patronage, and Fear to Stay in Power (MSN) Venezuelan Election: Opposition Disputes Nicolás Maduro's Win (MSN) What’s Happening in Venezuela - Protests, Election Uncertainty, and an Economic Crisis (CNN) Follow trusted voices, including: Fernando del Rincón ( CNN en Español ) Maria Elvira Salazar (U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 27th District) The Carter Center (an NGO dedicated to advancing human rights and alleviating suffering) NTN 24 (International news channel) Engage in Conversations: Share your thoughts and questions by commenting below and join discussions with others. Talk about Venezuela's crisis with family and friends to spread awareness. Use Your Voice: Participate in the electoral process wherever you are to hold your leaders accountable for their role in supporting Venezuela’s struggle for democracy. Let's stand together for a free and democratic Venezuela!

  • Mujeres, it's time to vote! Latinas are a voting force!

Amigas Queridas, Hello to all of you! I'm sending you a big, big hug through the computer screen. I have some hot chisme that you can't miss, so make yourselves comfortable and hold on! News of the Nation It's been a news-filled few weeks, so here's a quick recap to keep us in the loop and our heads held high.  At this time, let's draw our strength for solidarity and unity. We are in this together, being part of the same team and supporting each other. What's New in the 2024 Presidential Election The 2024 presidential race has had significant developments. Most notably, President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the race due to health reasons. He has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who is now the favored Democratic candidate (270toWin.com). Meanwhile, on the Republican side, former President Donald Trump leads the field, with recent polls showing him slightly ahead of Harris in some key states (270toWin.com). An unexpected event rocked the campaign when Donald Trump was the victim of an attack and suffered a gunshot wound. The incident has added a layer of uncertainty to the already tense presidential race. This presidential race promises to be close to the end! Federal Senate Elections In this year's Senate elections, 34 positions are up for grabs. Democrats have a narrow majority, and Republicans need to win at least two more seats to take control (Wikipedia). Keep your eyes on key races like Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania, where incumbent senators face big challenges (270toWin.com). House of Representatives The House of Representatives currently has a slim Republican majority. With the unfortunate passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, there are three vacant positions, and special elections are being held to fill them (Wikipedia). ¡Ojo! Heads Up! Make sure to listen to the candidates directly and in full, not just in short clips, to understand their true words. AI has become very sophisticated, so review the entire speech and context. Take the time to make an informed decision. Suerte Mi Gente! What's New in Wisconsin Elections 2024 Wisconsin State Senate Elections Wisconsin is on center stage nationally with the state Senate race. Incumbent Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin is seeking re-election and faces Republican Eric Hovde. This race promises to be competitive (270toWin.com). State Legislature The Wisconsin legislature is also up for grabs. Republicans control both chambers. Key issues include education funding, reproductive rights and infrastructure. Dane County Executive Elections- Meet the Candidates on Friday, July 26th, at Centro Hispano 2403 Cypress Way, Madison, Wi County elections in Dane County, Wisconsin are crucial for the Latino community because they determine how funding is allocated to local services that directly affect education, health care and economic opportunity. Participating ensures that the voices of the Latino community are heard and their priorities are represented. Let's Vote! The Impact of Latinas: United and Strong We are a voting force for the country! Latinas are a powerful voting force in the United States. With nearly 30 million Latinas in the country, our impact is undeniable. We are the engine that drives the economy and social change. Fighting for Pay Equity Wage discrimination is fought at the national level through a combination of laws and advocacy initiatives. Advocates work diligently to strengthen existing laws, close loopholes and promote wage transparency. While we focus on economic stability, we recognize that true wellness encompasses all social and political determinants of health. Midwest Mujeres is dedicated to promoting financial stability as a key factor in overall well-being. Wage discrimination is a challenge, but we can overcome it together! Family and Medical Leave Act (1993): Provides protected family and medical leave from work. Fair Labor Standards Act (2009): Sets the federal minimum wage and protects workers. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (1964): Prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
