Meet 2026 Voices and Dreams Academy participant Luz Padilla

2026 VOICES AND DREAMS ACADEMY PARTICIPANT SPOTLIGHT

“It is never too late to know yourself, change direction, and begin again.”

At 42, Luz Padilla is not starting from nothing. She is starting from experience.

She is a mother, an immigrant, a woman shaped by family responsibility, and someone who has already built a stable life through years of hard work. Now, Luz is asking a different question: What can I build when my choices come from who I truly am rather than from fear, old expectations, or the need to prove my strength?

Her answer is taking shape through education, real estate, and a growing belief that beginning again is not evidence of failure. It shows she is still listening to her dreams.

Building a life in a new country, Luz Padilla, I still have time

Luz came to the United States at 13 with the dream of a better life. As the oldest in her family, she learned early about responsibility, work, and the pressure to set an example. She adapted to a new country while holding onto her language, culture, and love for family.

Luz became a mother at 21 and welcomed her second child at 28. She built a home, cared for her family, and remained in the same job for nearly 10 years. From the outside, her life looked stable. Inside, she still felt another part of her was waiting to grow.

Choosing a new professional direction

In her mid-30s, Luz returned to school and left the job she had held for almost a decade. Both decisions required courage. She was not only changing her professional direction; she was challenging the idea that security meant she had to remain in a place she had outgrown.

Today, Luz is building her career as a Realtor with the long-term goal of opening her own real estate office. She continues learning, strengthening her professional confidence and creating relationships in her community. Real estate represents more than a new occupation. It is part of a larger reinvention and an opportunity to create economic possibilities for herself and her family.

Luz brings valuable experience into this next chapter: the adaptability of a young immigrant, the discipline of a longtime employee, the resourcefulness of a mother, and the perspective of a woman who knows success can be redefined at any age.

From surviving to choosing herself

For years, Luz believed strength meant working harder, carrying more, and moving forward no matter how she felt. She now recognizes that she spent much of her life in survival mode, responding to other people's needs and expectations before asking what she wanted for herself.

Her transformation is not about rejecting her family, culture, or past. Luz wants to keep her roots, language, resilience, and love for family. What she is releasing is the belief that a strong woman must endure everything without boundaries, support or rest.

She wants her children to see that strength can also mean asking for help, speaking honestly, changing direction, and choosing a life that reflects who you have become.

A story still being written

Luz does not claim to have all the answers. She is still discovering what makes her happy, which dreams truly belong to her, and what she is ready to leave behind.

Through the Voices and Dreams Academy, she is developing a story about immigration, motherhood, reinvention, and the courage to begin again. She hopes other women will hear her journey and think, "I still have time."

At 42, Luz is not too late. She is right on time for the life she is choosing to build now.
