Last week, Midwest Mujeres had the honor of hosting Maria Elena Matos-Schultz for our workshop, “Alzheimer's and Other Dementias: The Role of Family.” It was an afternoon filled with learning, reflection, and meaningful community connection.

One of the highlights of the event was welcoming several Peer Support Specialists from Centro (Hispano). Peer Support Specialists are individuals with lived experience who help others navigate challenges by providing guidance, encouragement, resources, and culturally responsive support. Their work helps reduce isolation and strengthens connections between community members and essential services.
We were honored to have these dedicated professionals join us and contribute their insights to the conversation.
During the workshop, participants learned about the early signs of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, practical caregiving strategies, and local resources available to support families.
We also reflected on an important truth: caring for others begins with caring for ourselves.

***We are deeply grateful to Maria Elena for sharing her expertise and passion with our community. You can view her presentation here: https://canva.link/icarepresentation and learn more about her work at https://www.icarerespite.com/ ***
