How do we share our stories when stepping up to the microphone feels intimidating?

Gabriela Parra
“Don’t just focus on what you’re going to say. Be intentional about the impact you want your words to have.”

— Gabriela Parra

During Midwest Mujeres’ October 15 Cyber Cafecito, immigration attorney Gabriela Parra and bilingual communicator and performer Shelene Zárate offered three reminders: know your story’s purpose, practice and prepare, and bring your authentic self—even when you’re nervous. Gabriela encouraged us to ask what we want people to think, feel, or do after hearing our story. She also emphasized practicing aloud and visualizing how we might handle unexpected moments.

“Don’t just visualize everything going perfectly. Visualize yourself handling imperfections with confidence.”

Know Your Purpose. Prepare Your Story. Be Yourself.

Public Speaking Tips

Shelene reminded us that preparation includes knowing the space, feeling comfortable in our clothes, breathing, and slowing down. Just as meaningful was her invitation to own our personalities and accept ourselves with care. We can be nervous and still connect with others through an honest story.
