2026 VOICES AND DREAMS ACADEMY PARTICIPANT SPOTLIGHT

“When people have information, support and a plan, they can make decisions that change their future.”

Olivia Buenrostro-Soto has built a career around helping people move from uncertainty toward possibility. Her work has taken her through public education, family services, nonprofit leadership, and financial education, but the purpose has remained consistent: helping individuals and families access the guidance they need to build a more stable future.

Today, Olivia is a senior financial advisor, educator, and co-founder of Lola's New Beginnings LLC. In both roles, she helps people navigate systems that can feel complicated and overwhelming.

Her participation in the Voices and Dreams Academy creates space to bring those experiences together and reflect on what it means to spend a career helping other people begin again.

More than two decades in public education

Before entering her current roles, Olivia spent more than 20 years with Milwaukee Public Schools. She served as a parent-student services coordinator and a student-services enrollment supervisor, coordinating community services, managing enrollment programs, and providing life-skills education to school-age parents.

That work placed Olivia close to families making important decisions while balancing school, parenting, and limited resources. She learned that information alone is not always enough. People also need someone who will listen, explain their options, and help them identify the next step.

Her education strengthened that foundation. Olivia earned a bachelor's degree in social science, with minors in psychology and business management, and a master's degree in education, specializing in instructional design, from Alverno College.

Making financial decisions more understandable

Since 2018, Olivia has worked with World Financial Group, helping clients develop individualized financial strategies, explore investment opportunities, plan for retirement and make informed decisions about their futures.

Financial systems can feel intimidating, particularly for people who have not always had access to clear guidance. Olivia's background as an educator helps her break down complex information and meet people where they are. Her goal is not to offer a one-size-fits-all answer, but to help each client understand the choices available to them.

For Olivia, financial education is connected to dignity and opportunity. A stronger understanding of money can help a family prepare for emergencies, plan for retirement, and imagine possibilities beyond immediate survival.

Supporting mothers through Lola's New Beginnings

In 2019, Olivia co-founded Lola's New Beginnings, a program supporting low-income pregnant women and mothers with infants. As director, she supports staff and care coordinators, oversees individualized care plans, and helps ensure mothers receive essential medical, social, and supportive services.

Her leadership also includes the daily responsibilities that keep an organization running: payroll, billing, compliance, and coordination. The work combines compassion with structure, recognizing that families need both caring relationships and reliable systems.

The name Lola's New Beginnings reflects an idea that runs through Olivia's career.

A new beginning rarely comes from a single service or conversation. It grows when people receive practical information, consistent support, and the opportunity to make their own decisions.

A voice shaped by service

Through the Voices and Dreams Academy, Olivia is developing the public story behind her years of service. Her professional experience carries lessons about education, financial confidence, family well-being, and the importance of building systems that help people move forward.

The full story she will share belongs to the stage. This spotlight offers a glimpse of the values behind it: service, preparation, and the belief that people deserve access to opportunities that can strengthen their future.

Olivia has helped students, parents, clients, mothers, and colleagues navigate major transitions. Now she is using her own voice to show how education and support can become the foundation for a new beginning.
