Midwest Mujeres: From Breaking Isolation to Building Social Capital

When Midwest Mujeres first began, our goal was simple:
To break the isolation of Latinas living in the Midwest.
Many of us were navigating careers, entrepreneurship, motherhood, caregiving, aging, and major life transitions without a strong network of women who understood our experiences. We were looking for a connection.
We were looking for community.
We were looking for one another.
What started as a small gathering of women sharing stories has grown into a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing poverty and income inequality through education, leadership development, storytelling, and community connection.
Today, Midwest Mujeres serves women across Wisconsin through workshops, leadership programs, community circles, mentorship, and professional development opportunities designed to help women grow their confidence, careers, businesses, and networks.
Our mission is to empower women, particularly low-income, first-generation Latina and Black women, with the tools, relationships, and opportunities they need to thrive.
Midwest Mujeres is More Than a Program
People often ask whether Midwest Mujeres is a leadership organization, a networking group, an arts organization, a women's circle, or a business development program.
The answer is yes.
We are a community where women can learn, connect, grow, and imagine new possibilities for themselves and their families.
Some women come to us because they want to start a business. Others are looking for professional development, friendship, healing, purpose, or simply a place where they can show up as themselves.
What they often discover is something they didn't know they were missing: social capital.
The introductions.
The mentors.
The friendships.
The opportunities.
The people who open doors.
At Midwest Mujeres, we believe social capital is one of the most valuable forms of wealth a person can build. Every workshop, circle, academy, and event is designed not only to share knowledge but to help women strengthen the relationships that can change the trajectory of their lives.
Why Storytelling Matters
Storytelling is at the heart of much of our work, but not because we believe everyone needs to stand on a stage.
We believe storytelling helps us understand who we are.
It helps us communicate our value.
It helps us connect across differences.
It helps us become visible to ourselves and to others.
Whether a woman is applying for a promotion, launching a business, advocating for her family, running for office, or introducing herself in a room full of strangers, her story matters.
When women learn to tell their stories with confidence, they often discover that their experiences hold wisdom, leadership, and power.
Joy, Rest, and Community
Many of the women who walk through our doors are balancing careers, caregiving, entrepreneurship, community commitments, and countless invisible responsibilities.
They are carrying a lot.
At Midwest Mujeres, we believe that joy matters.
That rest is necessary.
That community is a form of resilience.
Our programs create space not only for learning and achievement but also for reflection, celebration, creativity, and connection.
We are building a culture where women can grow without burning out.
What We're Hearing From Women
The most important lessons often come from the women sitting in the circle.
During recent workshops and gatherings, participants shared reflections that remind us why these spaces matter:
"Tener unidad entre hispanas y morenas para hacer comunidad." Building unity between Latina and Black women to create community.
"El segundo acto de nuestra vida."The second act of our lives.
"Quiero compartir mi experiencia para que otras mujeres no se sientan solas."
I want to share my experience so other women don't feel alone.
"Cada quien pasa por la menopausia diferente." Everyone experiences menopause differently.
"Estas etapas son normales."These stages are normal.
"Las hormonas están en batalla." The hormones are at war.
"Crea mucha confusión. No sé qué está pasando." It creates so much confusion. I don't know what's happening.
"No tengan vergüenza de preguntarles a los médicos." Don't be afraid to ask your doctors questions.
And perhaps the quote that captures our mission best:
"No soy la única. No me siento sola." I'm not the only one. I don't feel alone.
Education is important.
Leadership is important.
Economic opportunity is important.
But often, transformation begins when someone realizes they are not alone.
What We're Building Right Now
This year, women are gathering through Midwest Mujeres to talk about entrepreneurship and leadership, as well as caregiving, health, aging, finances, storytelling, and belonging.
Our community continues to grow through programs like Voices & Dreams Academy, community circles, financial wellness workshops, health education events, networking opportunities, and public storytelling experiences.
This work is helping women build confidence, visibility, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships.
Because when women know one another, opportunities multiply.
The Next Chapter
The next chapter of Midwest Mujeres is bigger than Madison.
In 2026, we began laying the foundation for Midwest Mujeres Milwaukee, our first chapter outside of Madison.
For us, this expansion is about more than geography.
It is about possibility.
We envision a future where women across Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest are connected through relationships, mentorship, shared resources, and opportunities.
We see graduates becoming mentors.
Participants are becoming speakers.
Attendees are becoming organizers.
Women who once doubted themselves are becoming the people others turn to for guidance.
The future of Midwest Mujeres is not a building.
It is not a single program.
It is a growing network of women investing in one another.
Women sharing resources.
Women opening doors.
Women creating opportunities.
Women building social capital.
When we started, we set out to break the isolation of Latinas living in the Midwest.
Today, we are building something even bigger:
A community where women can find connection, joy, rest, leadership, opportunity, and belonging.
And we're just getting started.
